Ran crossed her arms tightly over her chest and turned away from him. “I’m not being dramatic!“ She yelled. Geez, all this time you think I’d get some answers but NO. I just get told I’m being dramatic. Ran couldn’t help but be irritated by his smooth attitude, but at the very same time she couldn’t get angered at it. He was always like that - perhaps it meant that he was back for good?
As he spoke again her hopeful heart was hoping to hear more to the sentence he’d abruptly cut off. Ran looked over to him, dropping her arms back to her sides and just staring at him. In that moment, she supposed she’d gotten her answer…for the look on his face told not of how he was going to stay so they could discuss the matters they’d needed to but of how he was going to leave her once again…off on another ‘important’ case.
"I’ve been…” Ran paused a moment asking herself the very same question. She’d already had the answer but wasn’t going to worry Shinichi over something so stupid. “Great" Ran replied with a translucent smile.
“How’ve you been?”
“Oh, I have been doing well” Shinichi exclaimed, a bright smile on his face. For now he had to bullshit whatever he was up to, he suppose. “Solving one case after another… but I kinda missed this place though.”
His eyes darted around the place as he scanned the area. Shinichi really was here… as Shinichi. Not as Conan. Right now he had the opportunity to talk to Ran about anything, to tell her things he normally couldn’t. He was right here…
…. but he couldn’t. He couldn’t tell her anything he really wanted to tell her. He couldn’t share the truth, relieve her of her misery. He couldn’t make her suffer any less from the eternal wait and that stung. What was he supposed to do about this?
“Oi Ran, wanna go for a drink somewhere?”
Maybe staying for a little while and then leaving was for the best. He didn’t know how long he was going to stay “Shinichi” either. All of this had been so random, so sudden. There hadn’t been any pain this time either. Something he considered especially strange. Who knew if this was for forever?
